On Tuesday, January 27th, 2009, the Strategic Planning Team, including Superintendent Jeff Young, School Committee members Dori Zaleznik and Claire Sokoloff, and Lisa Prior, Principal of Prior Consulting,  will discuss some of the core concepts that have emerged--ideas such as "Preparing Students as Global Citizens", "Developing 21st Century Skills" and "Educating the Whole Child."

Opportunity to start a LEGO robotics team:
Newton's high school robotics team, Team 2877 NASA, PTC, BEC, Raytheon Newton Ligerbots is planning an outreach to all elementary and middle schools this Spring to generate interest in Science and Technology.

While we are currently busy planning for our own competition, we are also volunteering at nearby events, and planning a program to present at the elementary and middle schools to introduce the entire Newton community to our team. One way that we can engage more students in the fun of Science and Technology would be to act as mentors to new teams started at any school.

To find out about the outreach program and getting your own robotics team organized, contact Debbie Lund, Newton North Coach of Team 2877 NASA, PTC, BEC, Raytheon Newton, Deborah_Lund@newton.k12.ma.us

HIDING JEWS IN WORLD WAR II ITALY
Wednesday, January 14, 7 pm

Did you know that Italian families sheltered Jews during World War II?  Hear first-hand accounts of this time from both sides of the experience, told by long-time Newton residents. Ena Lorant and Alisa Palmeri will tell the story of their flight from Nazi-occupied Yugoslavia to Italy where they were eventually sheltered by a brave Italian family. Maria Puzzanghero tells her personal story from the other side - in another small Italian town, her family helped and hid a family of Jews and participated in a daring escape. Free.

CELBRATING THE JACKSON HOMESTEAD & ITS ARCHITECURE, Thursday, January 29, 6-8pm

Join us for an evening of celebration of our building, the Jackson Homestead!  The house, built in 1809, has seen 200 years of physical and social changes. To mark this important occasion, we will be unveiling a new exhibit about the architecture and use of the building throughout its history. In conjunction with the unveiling, there will be a lecture about the architecture of the house. Part of the 200th Anniversary Series. Free.

Free Museum Admission during January! http://www.ci.newton.ma.us/jackson/

STAND FOR CHILDREN ANNUAL SUMMIT
The second event is Stand for Children's annual education summit on Saturday, January 24th at Reading High School from 8:30-3:30.  The Summit is for parents, teachers, elected officials, and community members like us who are concerned about children and public education and want to learn more about how to make a difference in this tough economic climate.

This year, the theme will be how to work together to keep our commitment to kids in tough times. It's always a great opportunity to connect with likeminded people and to talk together about how to protect our schools and move them forward.  Speakers will include education, policy, business, and advocacy experts.

Details are below. You can contact Allison Balter at abalter@stand.org  with any questions. We look forward to seeing you there!
