Dear Families,

It's hard to believe that we are a quarter of the way through the school year.  Students and faculty are actively engaged in the learning process as well as in the many activities sponsored by our school community.  I look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming events.

The Youth Risk Behavior Survey was developed by the Newton Public Schools in collaboration with the Health Department.  This survey collects information about adolescent health-related behaviors that helps us to develop better curriculum and prevention and intervention programs.  The sixth-grade survey addresses issues such as student alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use, safety, stress, diet and exercise.  The seventh- and eight-grade questionnaire includes all of the above as well as questions on sexuality. The surveys are anonymous, and your child's participation is completely voluntary.  Copies of the survey are available for preview in the Main Office at Day during our normal business hours (7:30a.m.-4:00 p.m.) or at the Health Department or Education Center.  We will assume that you consent to your child's participation, unless you opt out by notifying me on or before Monday, November 24th.  I can be reached by phone at 617-559-9100 or email at Gina_Healy@newton.k12.ma.us.

 Day Serves Day

TThe PTO has organized the first annual Day Serves Day on Saturday, November 15th from 9-1.  Here's your chance to make a difference and help out our school.  Please join student and parent volunteers as we work to beautify our school inside and out.  There will be leaf removal, bulb planting, interior painting, computer cleaning, and much more.  All are welcome.  Please note that students must be supervised by a parent or other adult. We look forward to seeing you rain or shine!

Flu Clinics for Students

The Newton Public Health Department is piloting a FluMist program that will allow students to be vaccinated against the flu.  Students who have registered and paid for the vaccine will be immunized on Wednesday, November 19th.  Participating students should report to the Exercise Room on the first floor of the school on Wednesday morning at 7:30.   If you have questions regarding this program, please call Gayle Larson, our school nurse, at 617-559-9140.

Parent  Conference Registration

Parents/Guardians will have an opportunity to discuss their child's progress with teachers at conferences to be held on four consecutive Tuesdays in January.  This year, parents/guardians will have the option of meeting with individual teachers or with the student's whole team at once.  You may register on-line a for the conferences beginning on December 1st at www.virtualparagon.com/day/conference/.   Please refer to a letter that will be sent home in backpacks on November 24th. Of course, if you have concerns about your child at any time during the school year, you should contact his/her teacher.  Please use the contact information that we sent home at the beginning of the year.

 METCO Parents' Meeting

Lisa Reed, Director of the Newton METCO Program, holds regular meetings for parents throughout the school year.  This month's meeting will be held on Monday, November 17th from 7-9 p.m. at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury.

Canned Food Drive

Day students have organized a Canned Food Drive to benefit Bristol Lodge, a homeless shelter in Waltham, from November 17-25.  Students may contribute by bringing  non-perishable food items to their Homeroom/Community classroom.  On Monday, November 24th, there will also be a cash collection to purchase turkeys for needy families.  I hope that many of our students and families will participate in this opportunity to help our neighbors.

Cabaret tickets on Sale

Our home-grown production, Cabaret:  Out of the Box, will open on Thursday, November 20th with an additional performance on Friday, November 21st.  Tickets are on sale now for what promises to be our best show ever.

It was good to see many of you at the principal's coffee and at various meetings during the past few weeks.  Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Gina Healy
