This is when you will find out who your mystery host is for dinner. Dinner will be at 8.00pm at the house of your host.

At 10.00pm, you will come back to the New Art Center for coffee and dessert.

 The City of Newton is highlighting heart health in recognition of February Heart Month. Look for new programs, interactive opportunities, and, most of all, tips on how you can lead a healthier life.

“Heart month is a great time to take a step back and think about what we can be doing for ourselves and our families to lead healthier lives year-round,” said Dori Zaleznik, MD, Newton’s Commissioner of Health and Human Services.

The city, in partnership with Cataldo Ambulance Service, will be drawing attention to the Automated External Defibrillator program, offering a CPR/AED training course and sharing healthy tips on the city website at www.newtonma.gov.

To kick things off, the American Heart Association (AHA) has simplified heart disease prevention with Life’s Simple 7 and the My Life Check Assessment.

These free online tools can help individuals to evaluate their heart health in the privacy of their own homes, learn more about seven risk factors for heart disease, and take action to make simple changes that can both improve quality of life and save lives.

The 7 steps recommended by the AHA are:

• Get active.
• Control cholesterol.
• Eat better.
• Manage blood pressure.
• Lose weight.
• Reduce blood sugar.
• Stop smoking.

Sharps Disposal Information for Newton residents

Sharps are needles and lancets used at home to inject medicine into people or pets. Properly disposing of sharps helps keep potentially harmful products out of the waste stream. A new state law takes effect July 1, 2012 that prohibits people from disposing of needles and lancets in the trash.

Household sharps are accepted for disposal at City Hall Customer Service and the Newton Health Department during regular business hours, Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesdays until 8 p.m. Sharps must be in a red medical waste or other sturdy plastic container. Mr. Gresser, Mr. Scott, Mr. Webster and last year’s champion, Mr. Dewees each made 21 of 25 free throws and took the contest to a second round shoot-out.

Gabe Webster prevailed in the shoot-out making 20 of 25 free throws. Way to go Mr. Webster.

The hundreds of predictions sheets turned in by students have been tallied and the winners of the facutly foul-ups prediction contest are:

Calley Dias from the Sage Team.

Theo and Calley each made seven correct predictions. They will receive a faculty foul-ups t-shirt and $20 gift certificate to Newbury Comics.

There were 4 runners-up who made 6 correct predictions. They are:

Each of our runners up will receive $15 gift certificates to Newbury Comics.

Winners can collect their prizes in the main office.

A whopping 9 kids made 5 correct predictions and achieved honorable mention status. Check out the next issue of the daytime for a complete listing of those names. Congratulations to all of the winners and thanks to everyone for making predictions and coming out to cheer the teachers on at the event.

This is a fun evening of live folk and acoustic music, started 12 years ago by a group of Franklin Elementary School parents, and since last year has been a benefit for the Day PTO. This year, the headline act is a Celtic music trio Corvus. In addition, we’ll have music by event founder and former Day parent Rob Siegel, including Day parents and friends like Pam McA’Nulty, George Attisano, Barb Cassidy, and Eric Chasalow, with Eric Moore returning as emcee.

Thank you to everyone who donated to this year’s fund drive. We have raised $30,000. You can’t even begin to imagine how much this means to the teachers.

We have already bought a Mac Laptop cart complete with 10 laptops. We will now be able to buy another complete laptop cart, a bunch of document camera’s (which the teachers love), some projectors and new PC’s for the PC lab. This is on top of the entire Mac Lab the PTO purchased for the school after last year’s fund drive. An official thank you letter and tax receipt will go out in the next few weeks.

Thank you to all the parents who helped with the fund drive, sending emails, stuffing envelopes, etc. We could not have done it without your help.
